Part of Our Core Mission
Here at Guerrero Heritage Ranch, one of our core missions is to support local agriculture and farmers. Part of this means that we are supporting youth in Agriculture. Dannielle has a passion to teach youth in the community about ag literacy and loving your ethnic identity. This is a fancy way of saying that it’s ok to have parents (and maybe you are one) who are field workers, or a “low” skilled job. It’s her job to teach youth, parents, and academics to think outside of the box and look at passions within the youth. A lot of her work deals with STEAM and Ag Literacy. She does a lot of work with the Junior Livestock Department of the fair. Hands-on learning and getting dirty with the kids are her jam. A fun fact about Dannielle is that she claims to have 170 kids who love to show livestock and different projects.
Showing livestock is more than raising animals. It’s knowing anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, feed percentages, growth rates, marketing and much more. A new competition is the buyer’s letter competition. This is the second year. To sum it up, the youth have to write letters to buyers, mail them or take them to businesses, and hopefully someone from those businesses show up and bid on their animals and buy them. The buyer’s competition adds in a dinner that the buyers show up and the kids have to verbally market their animals to every single buyer individually.
Here at the Ranch, we are so new. We cannot afford to buy an animal at the auction. Well that, and both Dannielle and Andre will be working. But you can help. You can register for a buyer or do an add-on to a youth’s livestock sale. Any price from $25 and up. Since we can’t afford a whole animal, we are donating 9 dozen of Dannielle’s cupcakes, in regular size. And we may do some add-ons. The other way you can help is to spread the word. There are 2.1 million people in our county, and the attendance for the junior livestock auction is minimal. Talk about it. Show them this blog or the San Bernardino County Fair website, or our Instagram. Let people know that there is still a county fair. And that there are still youth in agriculture that want to have a future career in ag. Whether it’s ag mechanics, bio-engineering, breeding programs, or butchering. They are our future, so let’s support them.
